Abstract

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common urological disorders affecting aging men. It is characterized by non-malignant enlargement of the prostate gland, resulting in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, weak urinary stream, hesitancy, and incomplete bladder emptying. The prevalence of BPH increases with advancing age and significantly affects quality of life. Modern medicine explains BPH as a consequence of hormonal changes, particularly the action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and manages it through lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and surgical intervention. Ayurveda correlates BPH with Mutraghata, especially Vatashthila, where aggravated Apana Vata associated with Kapha causes urinary obstruction. Ayurvedic management includes Nidana Parivarjana, Shamana Chikitsa, Shodhana Chikitsa, Basti, Uttarbasti, Kshara preparations, herbal medicines, and dietary modifications. This review presents the modern understanding of BPH alongside Ayurvedic concepts and highlights the potential role of integrative management
